FOURTEEN
âWhat do you mean, you didnât see which way he went?â Moa repeated, for the hundredth time, as hordes of shoppers filed by on every side. âYou were flying right over his head!â
âYes,â Massha asserted patiently, though I could tell she was embarrassed. âI almost had him, when he vanished, right there in front of Cartokâs. Two strangers ran off from that point in exactly opposite directions. I didnât know which one to follow.â
âHe had a confederate in the crowd,â I reasoned. âWily. I might have used a tactic like that myself.â
Moa glanced at me, then shook his head as if to clear it.
âWoofle, could youââ He made some passes with his hands. Woofle performed a gesture or two. The others looked more comfortable when he finished, but a couple of passers-by nearly jumped out of their skins at my apparent transformation. âThank you. I prefer to talk to you face-to-face. Itâs very disorienting.â
âBut effective,â I pointed out. âIt worked. We almost had him.â
âBut we didnât,â Moa reminded me. âHe got away clean, and we donât know any more than we did before.â
âNope,â I corrected him. âWe learned something very important: whoever they are, these impostors donât know what theyâre doing.â
âHuh?â Chumley asked.
âWhat do you mean, Aahz?â Moa pressed. âTheyâre just as much of a pain in the you-know-where as before. More, if we have to put up with them harassing innocent customers!â
âNope,â I corrected him. âTheyâre less. We were wrong. We thought Rattila had employed a bunch of shape shifters to gather power for him. I proved last night that the cards themselves make you change, not magikal talent. Those impostors, whoever they are, know how to use those cards, and they make use of some of the abilities of the people whose personalities theyâre stealing, like charm or strength, but nothing that doesnât rely on instinct. Thatâs why I think theyâre not magicians. Iâm betting none of them are. They donât know what theyâre doing. Otherwise, we wouldnât be able to get close to the Skeeves. The kid may not be the most experienced magician in the world, but he packs one hell of a magikal punch, and he knows how to fly as well as a bunch of other things that I taught him. None of them have an instinct for magik. Weâre lucky. I wouldnât be surprised if they were all mall-rats, or something else of a low order of evolution.â
âNotta chanceââ Parvattani scoffed. Then he glanced at Eskina. âI suppose-a itâs possible,â he conceded.
âIt is likely,â Eskina exclaimed, energetically. âThose would not challenge Rattila for his power.â
âSo whatâs our next move, Green Genius?â Massha asked, looking more enthusiastic than she had before.
âWe could use some more firepower, but I donât want to involve anyone else,â
I thought out loud. âI donât want anyone else finding out that these crooks are making a fool of Skeeve.â
âWoofle will help,â Moa stated. Reluctantly, the financial Flibberite nodded. I lifted a finger. âGood. Thatâs one.â
âAahz! Hey, Aahz!â
A female voice calling my name attracted my attention.
